Signing Day Articles
Junior College Recruiting and SU
by The Mole
The names popped up suddenly, as junior college names tend to do. First there was Kwazi Leverette and Jeremie Frazier committed to Syracuse and then the Chad Elliott saga, followed by Mo Jackson and Jose Harris. So, let’s take a little journey down memory lane.

Only six jucos have signed with Syracuse in recent memory.

‘93-’94:

Olindo Mare, K
Mike Butler, DT
Dan Olivis, OL

Mare was the only one of the three to see the field. Butler came in with huge hype, mostly because he was the only defensive lineman signed. Olivis (I think I can be forgiven if I screwed up this guy’s
name, maybe three people in the world probably remember his stint at Syracuse, and those three
would much rather forget) also got some signing day hype, mostly because he was an 18 on the
Richter Scale. Sure enough, he came in as heavy as advertised and only got heavier. He got most of his action at Syracuse at team meals.

‘96-’97:

Dave Dunkin, P

He was solid, which just goes to show, when you go Juco, try to get a kicker.

‘97-’98:

Eric Downing, DT

Now, here is a Juco success story. Nothing but good news about Downing. First, he saw action his
first year. Then we hear he has a third year of eligibility. Downing makes plays. The notable fact
about Downing is we signed him out of high school. In other words, we had good information on this guy.

‘98-’99

Idris Price, LB

Mr. Price, Mr. Price, will you ever put on a Syracuse uniform? Syracuse fans waited years for this
guy. And he never did get eligible. The talented, talented Mr. Price. Well, it’s not as if he could have
single handedly changed this season around.

‘99-’00

Chad Elliott, QB
Jeremie Frazier, TE
Kwazi Leverette, WR
Jose Harris, FB
Maurice Jackson, WR
B.J. Darnell, DB
David Hohensee, TE

All in all a pretty iffy proposition. Fifty percent have been effective players for Syracuse, and that
seems okay until you realize that that constitutes only three players and those include two kickers and one guy we signed out of high school. It really makes you wonder. So, while we might have scored big with Elliott, Frazier, Harris, Darnell, Hohensee, Jackson and Leverette and they may turn out to be the real deal, I wouldn’t get too excited yet.
